The Macromolecular Science and Engineering Program (Macro) at the University of Michigan has been a leader in the field of polymer science and engineering for over 50 years. Housed within the highly ranked College of Engineering, our interdisciplinary program includes students and faculty in the University of Michigan Medical School, Dental School, and College of Literature, Science, & the Arts.

We are proud to have 37 affiliated faculty who bring their polymers expertise to a dozen different fields at Michigan. Their interests range from polymer synthesis, microfluidics, and tissue engineering to sensors, computational nanoscience, mechanical behaviors, and nanoelectronics. Our faculty body largely draws from Engineering (Aerospace, Biomedical, Chemical, Electrical, Materials Science, and Mechanical), the Dental School, and the Department of Chemistry.

Macro is an interdisciplinary program and we encourage students from a wide range of engineering and science academic backgrounds.  Current students in our program have studied all manners of engineering in addition to chemistry, physics, and biology.

One of the many things that make the Macro program unique is the ability for students to tailor their academic program to fit individual interests while being trained by a diverse faculty body.  Students can choose from seven course options or create an individualized option.

The Macro program has graduated over 250 students into a global community of faculty members and private research leaders.  Exchange agreements with institutions in Asia present the chance for students to receive a truly global education.

The University of Michigan is a globally recognized public research institution whose research spending tops $1.6 billion annually.  The city of Ann Arbor is consistently ranked as a top community and offers exciting opportunities for students beyond the classroom.  We encourage you to explore all that Macro has to offer!
