Current undergraduates at Michigan are eligible to participate in the Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Studies (SUGS) Program to earn your Master’s from Macro with just one additional year of study.  Students are able to double-count select courses from their undergraduate degree towards the Master’s requirements.  Students can participate in research or elect to focus on coursework. 

Requirements

  • 30 credit hours of approved graduate level courses
  • 9 credit hours of Macromolecular Science & Engineering courses
  • 9 credit hours of coursework in the student’s major option
  • Students can use up to 6 hours of research credits (Macro 890) with written report
  • SUGS students may double count up to 9 credits of prior approved coursework from their undergraduate degree toward their graduate degree. Only graduate level technical or general electives taken during the junior or senior years may be double counted.
  • SUGS students may transfer up to 6 credits into the graduate degree. These transfer credits cannot be used for any portion of the undergraduate degree.
  • A maximum of 15 credits can be double counted or transferred
  • SUGS students must enroll in Rackham for a minimum of two full terms (at least 9 credits per term), paying full Rackham tuition.

Application Process

  • During junior year, the student meets with their undergraduate advisor and the Macro Program Coordinator to complete the SUGS Election Form. The student will work with their undergraduate advisor and the Macro Program Coordinator to outline a preliminary study plan to make appropriate course selections for their junior and senior years, including courses for proposed double counting and transferring.
  • During senior year, the students must apply for the SUGS program by completing the online Rackham Graduate School application. A statement of purpose, a personal statement, transcript(s), CV, three letters of recommendation, and $75.00 application fee are required. 
  • The SUGS application deadline is at the beginning of the second-semester senior year.
    • Fall term application deadline: January 15, for seniors graduating in April.
    • Winter term application deadline: October 1, for seniors graduating in December.
  • Minimum GPA 3.2
